Support/implement programs that stimulate science, technology, engineering, mathematics and invention innovation for our secondary students
Students in grades 7-12 are \’opting\’ out (taking \”free\” periods) out of their normal middle/high school classes to attend 2- & 4-yr. colleges and universities where they are often \”mentored\” by faculty and graduate students because they want \”meaningful\” opportunities in STEMI courses and laboratory experiences. Bright HS students are in-part bored with the traditional experiences, unless they are engaged in AP Science and Math classes, Baccalaureate courses, or university courses that \’count\’ toward their HS graduation requirements.
We need to:
1) Provide meaningful secondary experiences by encouraging our STEMI faculty to become better prepared by obtaining higher degrees in CONTENT areas rather than in education, per se.
2) Encourage STEMI-centric students to find challenging, award bestowing programs that reach out to them with myriad opportunities; i.e., the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), the Junior Educational and Technical Society (JETS), USA Biology Olympiad, Best Robotics, Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), Team America Rocketry Competition, Am. Computer Science League, HS Mathematical Modeling Contest, USA Chemistry Olympiad, Science Olympiad, Project Lead the Way, Young Inventors Program (YIP), Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP), Fostering American Students in Science and Technology (FAST2), Natl. Ocean Science Bowl (NOSB), MATE Intl. ROV Competition, and Skills USA to name a few of this countries more important and far reaching programs.
3) Provide teacher training/CEC accreditation for working with and in research endeavors to better ‘translate’ the science for easier consumption, application and understanding.
4) Link our Natl. laboratories to student and teacher institutes and summer internships.
If anyone wants to listen, there are many, many outstanding teachers and researchers having strong outreach programs willing to sit and share ideas. Why not put together a ‘real’ brain storming event to glean what is alreday known by so many of us. I stand at the ready to serve my President Elect!
My best, Gary Laursen
